General Liability Insurance FAQs
Common questions about GL coverage for your business
What’s the difference between General Liability and Professional Liability?
+General Liability covers bodily injury and property damage physical harm. Professional Liability (E&O) covers financial losses from your professional services, advice, or mistakes. A consultant needs both: GL for slip-and-falls at their office, E&O for bad advice that costs a client money.
Service businesses (lawyers, accountants, consultants, tech companies) typically need both policies. Product-based businesses often only need General Liability plus Product Liability coverage.
How much General Liability coverage do I need?
+Most businesses carry $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate written as $1M/$2M. This is the minimum most contracts require. Higher-risk businesses or those with larger contracts often need $2M/$4M or more.
Check your commercial lease, client contracts, and vendor agreements. They’ll specify required coverage amounts. It’s better to have excess coverage than to be underinsured when a major claim occurs.
Does General Liability cover employee injuries?
+No. Employee injuries are covered by Workers’ Compensation insurance, which is required by law in most states if you have employees. General Liability only covers third parties customers, clients, vendors, and visitors.
If an employee is injured, Workers’ Comp pays their medical bills and lost wages. If a customer is injured, General Liability responds. Both policies are essential for most businesses with physical locations or employees.
Does my home insurance cover my home-based business?
+No. Homeowners and renters insurance explicitly exclude business activities. If a client visits your home office and gets injured, your home insurance won’t cover it. You need separate General Liability coverage for business operations.
Some insurers offer in-home business endorsements for very small operations, but most home-based businesses need standalone General Liability policies starting around $500-$800 annually.
When does my General Liability coverage start?
+Coverage typically begins immediately or within 24 hours of policy purchase and payment. You’ll receive a Certificate of Insurance (COI) that you can provide to landlords, clients, and vendors as proof of coverage.
Don’t wait to buy insurance. It only covers incidents that occur after the policy starts. If something happens before you’re insured, you have no coverage and pay everything out-of-pocket.
What’s not covered by General Liability?
+GL doesn’t cover: Employee injuries (need Workers’ Comp), professional mistakes (need E&O), auto accidents (need Commercial Auto), property you own (need Commercial Property), cyber attacks (need Cyber Liability), or intentional acts.
Think of General Liability as covering accidents and injuries involving third parties at your location or during operations. Everything else requires additional specialized policies.
Can I get General Liability with a claims history?
+Yes, but expect higher premiums and possibly coverage exclusions. Insurers view past claims as indicators of future risk. Multiple claims in a short period may require specialty “surplus lines” insurers who charge more.
Always disclose claims history honestly on applications. Lying voids coverage when you need it most. Work with an experienced broker who can find carriers willing to write businesses with claims history.
Is General Liability the same as a Business Owners Policy (BOP)?
+No, but a BOP includes General Liability. A Business Owners Policy bundles GL with Commercial Property insurance and Business Interruption coverage into one package usually at a lower price than buying separately.
BOPs are ideal for small to mid-sized businesses with physical locations. If you only need liability coverage (no property to insure), standalone General Liability is the right choice.
